African Cuisine

There aren't many African
restaurants around but as
that famous meme says,
"I will look for you, i will
find you and I will Review
you" lol! I'm excited about
this one because this will
be an opportunity to have
what other Africans have.
Being South African, all I
Know is Chesanyama and
Mala Mogodu and pap... hope You're excited just as I am.
Let's dig In...

ADDIS IN CAPE

Combo

price: R150
address: Corner Church & Long Street, 41 Church St, Cape Town, 8001

When I started this blog one of the things I was excited about was trying out new cuisine and I knew Addis was the place to start. When you walk up the stairs you can smell the frankincense that sets a Calm mood throughout the restaurant. You’re then met by very friendly waiters that are ready to serve you. I expected a set-up that’s different from the typical table/chair/white cloth set up, and boy-oh-boy was it REALLY different. You sit on a low but comfortable stool and the table looks like a bowl covered by a thatched hat. It is beautiful…
Now, whatever you order comes with traditional Ethiopian flat bread called INJERA and it comes in rolls and all you have to do is tear it up in pieces and have at it(just like pap). I ordered a combo meal in which you can choose any two of their singular dishes, so I ordered DORO TIBS IN BERBERE (chicken fillet in Berbere sauce) and TIBS (beef or lamb). It is worth noting that before you dig in, the waiter comes with a dish and a kettle of warm water to wash your hands (as I nostalgically think about my grandparents)...

Any dish is lined with INJERA and whatever the table ordered is carefully flipped over it. The chicken was well seasoned and moist, which made it easier to eat. The lamb however, was a bit dry as it was boiled with a bit of cabbage. My advice is, order anything, chicken beef lamb or fish in berbere; It is a mild sauce that makes anything you eat delicious. My fellow foodie (ShoutOut to Vanessa Black) had prawns and beef and the prawns were just the best; soft and well seasoned. The the beef was however dry. The portions could be better as well but because of the INJERA your hunger will be satisfied.

Besides the food the restaurant has some really interesting drinks and cocktails. I had ginger beer with ice, mint and chilli (as seen above)

Overall, I liked the experience and the quiet atmosphere. The restaurant is authentic and truly Ethiopian. So Addis, here we come…!

Chip 'n Ranch, Mowbray

Price: R81

As I said goodbye to cape town after 4 long years, I decided to do, as a last review, Sunrise Chip 'N Ranch's mutton roti gatsby. Gatsby's are BIG in Cape Town (see what I did there?) and this is PERFECT as a last review.

For those of you who don't know, the conventional gatsby is a foot-long sandwich that is filled with as much chips, salad and viennas as possible. It comes in different flavours; chicken, polony, fish and sausage amongst others. With this one however, instead of a bun there is a big roti wrap, and the fillings are mutton curry, carrots and chips. The size of that gatsby is enormous! And the fillings are just as much as in a normal gatsby. To make it easier for you, the gatsby is cut into 2 halves so you can see all the goodness inside.

What a farewell I had having this meal. The mutton is soft and can be chewed easily, and you can taste a lot of curry inthere. The chips are slap chips, which are soft and the good thing is, there's no visible oil and you can't taste it either. What makes the gatsby great is the carrots believe it or not. They're sweet and they make the gatsby come together.

This is a big meal and I suggest that you share it with at least two other friends. Masutsa signing out! Its been great cape town :)
